Loudspeakers are devices that convert electrical audio signals into sound. They are usually the final part of a hi-fi system, taking the signal from an amplifier and transforming it into the music and other audio that we hear.
Most loudspeakers contain one or more drivers that move backwards and forwards in response to an electrical signal. This movement creates changes in air pressure, producing sound waves. Different drivers are often designed to reproduce different parts of the frequency range.
A typical loudspeaker may use a woofer to reproduce lower frequencies and a tweeter for higher frequencies. Some designs also include a separate midrange driver for frequencies between the bass and treble. An internal crossover divides the audio signal and sends the appropriate frequencies to each driver.
Loudspeakers come in several different forms. Standmount or bookshelf speakers are compact designs normally positioned on dedicated stands or furniture, while floorstanding speakers use larger cabinets that sit directly on the floor. Passive loudspeakers require an external amplifier, whereas active loudspeakers have amplification built into the speaker itself.
The cabinet is also an important part of a loudspeaker's design. Its size, shape, materials and internal construction can influence the resulting sound. Some speakers use sealed cabinets, while others have bass-reflex ports designed to improve or extend their low-frequency performance.
Choosing the right loudspeakers depends on factors including room size, speaker placement, listening distance and the amplifier being used. Larger speakers are not necessarily better for every system, particularly in smaller rooms where a compact loudspeaker may be easier to position and integrate.
Loudspeakers can have a significant influence on the overall performance of a hi-fi system. Differences in drivers, crossover design, cabinet construction and engineering give different loudspeakers their own characteristics, making speaker selection an important part of building a well-balanced audio system.
