A midrange driver is a loudspeaker driver specifically designed to reproduce the middle section of the audible frequency range. It is commonly found in three-way and multi-way loudspeakers, where different drivers are responsible for reproducing different frequencies.

In a typical three-way loudspeaker, the woofer handles the lower frequencies, the midrange driver reproduces the middle frequencies and the tweeter handles the highest frequencies. A crossover divides the incoming audio signal and sends the appropriate range of frequencies to each driver.

The exact frequencies handled by a midrange driver depend on the design of the loudspeaker. A typical midrange driver might operate from a few hundred hertz to several thousand hertz, although the actual crossover points can vary considerably between different speaker designs.

Not every loudspeaker requires a dedicated midrange driver. In a two-way speaker, the woofer or mid-bass driver usually reproduces both bass and midrange frequencies before handing over to the tweeter. A three-way design introduces a dedicated midrange driver, allowing each driver to operate over a more specialised frequency range.
